Federation Internationale Cynologique

The Federation Internationale Cynologique (FCI), is the largest canine governing body.
Federation Internationale CynologiqueOriginally founded on 22nd May 1911 in Paris, its founding members were associations from Belgium, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Austria.  In 1921 it was revived after the end of World War I and by February 2009 there were 83 member and partner countries.

The FCI promotes worldwide, the use of race and breeding dogs, the kennel club and the welfare of dogs. The FCI breed descriptions are published in their official languages: English; German; French and Spanish. Its regulations provide for the exclusive recognition of the herd books of their member and partner organizations.  The two other major associations in addition to the FCI are the British Kennel Club (KC) and the American Kennel Club (AKC).

At national level, the FCI delegates the recording of the breeding records and the creation of breeding guidelines to the affiliated clubs. The herd books for the respective races are run by one or two member countries (patronage).  Thus, for example, Germany leads for the German shepherd. Belgium and France for example are jointly responsible for the Bichon Frize. In countries of origin, not attached to the FCI, the studbook is led either by representing another country, or the FCI itself.   The member countries of the FCI achieve results by international dog shows and working trials.

Activities of the FCI

International Working Champion
International Racing Champion

The international exhibitions and international examinations and competitions for these titles are held in the respective member countries. They are eligible only for the FCI recognized breeds.
Breed standards and nomenclature

The FCI accepted international standards on the basis of each breed’s origin or the patronage of the country. In its Statute, the FCI has given top priority to the welfare of dogs.  The recognition of breed standards is done in two stages.  The final recognition is done by the General Assembly of the FCI and only after preliminary approval, is the standard published.  During the procedure, there are standards that are waiting for preliminary recognition. The numbers the FCI breed standard is divided into groups and sections of the races.
