Ariegeois dog

This breed is also known as the Ariegeois rabbit dog, derived from his Ariegeois Dogspecial field of application. Very similar to the Ariege pointer, the two are often confused with each other. The Ariegeois comes from a large crossing of briquets trained and bred for their advantages while avoiding their shortcomings.

They were crossed with, among other breeds, the grand bleu de Gascogne and the grand Gascon Saintongeois. The origin of the breed is in the French province of Ariege, located in southwestern France.

Description

The dog is used for hunting and, because of its average size (58 cm) and construction, whether alone or in a pack the dog has proven to be a valuable assistant. It is an elegant and refined, lighter, medium-sized dog.

The hair is short, thin and thick. The color is white with clear, well-defined black spots, and occasionally black pits; it has very pale tan markings on its cheeks and eyes.

The ears are leathery, smooth, folded and hanging down, placed at the base, narrow and slightly below the eye line. Its lips typically do not hang out on the lower jaw. The dog has a well set, saber tail.

The Ariegeois looks very muscular, with a long, moderately wide chest that extends to elbow level. The body is well adapted to hunting rabbits. As is evident from the description, he is a dog with long legs; big hounds are very similar.
