Alaskan Klee Kai Dog

Alaskan klee kai is a northern breed belonging to the spitz family.  The name “klee kai” is derived from the language of the Inuit, which means a small dog.

This breed was developed in Wasilla, Alaska in the mid-1970s by Linda S. Spurlin, who was Alaskan Klee Kaiinspired by the chance combination of an Alaskan husky with a small dog.  It was created on the basis of Siberian and Alaskan huskies, schipperkes and American Eskimo dogs in order to reduce the size of the dog while avoiding dwarfism.

Originally the breed was called “klee kai” for political reasons, and then in 1995 the breed was split into “Alaskan klee kai” and “klee kai.”  In 2002, the breed was again unified under a new name.  United Kennel Club recognized the breed in the late 90s.
